Funny Fu Manchu Mustache Happy Birthday Pics
'Make Me Asian' Google app that gives users Fu Manchu mustaches and rice paddy hats branded racist
A Google app has been branded racist for allowing users to take a photo and alter the shape of their eyes and don a Fu Manchu mustache and rice paddy hat 'like an Asian'.
Another app by the same creator, KimberyDeiss, darkens users' skin, allows them to grow long black hair, wear a feathered headband and become covered with war paint 'like an Indian'.
The 'Make Me Asian' and 'Make Me Indian' apps, which can be bought at Google Play, have outraged users, who have launched online petitions and campaigns to close them down.
'This is just a fun app (that) lets you indulge you and your friends,' according to the app. 'You can for a few seconds to make (yourself) a Chinese, Japanese, Korean or any other Asians.'
Offensive: Asian Americans have hit out against this Make Me Asian app which takes a user's picture and gives them stereotypically Asian features, including changing their eyes and giving them a rice paddy hat
But 18 Million Rising, a group named after the number of Asian-Americans in the U.S., says the apps give ' racist and offensive portrayals' and 'perpetuate damaging racial stereotypes'.
'They say there's an app for everything, but an app for racism goes too far,' ads for the group read.
Washington pastor Peter Chin has also launched an e-petition against the apps on Change.org.
'Google's motto is "Don't Be Evil", which makes it difficult to fathom why they support the Make Me Asian and Make Me Indian apps by KimberyDeiss on their Google Play Store, apps which overlay dated and racist stereotypes on your photos,' he wrote.
Replica: The mustache is a nod to Fu Manchu, here portrayed by actor Christopher Lee
'Tell Google these apps perpetuate hateful and offensive racial stereotypes that have been used to humiliate Asians and Native Americans for centuries, and you want both apps removed immediately.'
He told CNN he felt compelled to start the petition after Google failed to remove the apps.
'Google normalizes everything from Google maps, Gmail,' he said. ' I wanted to make sure this app isn't given a pass of approval.'
Many users have also fought back on the Google Play site.
Stereotype: Another app, Make Me Indian, by the same creator gives users a father headband and war paint
'Being Native American I find this app to be extremely offensive & stereotypical,' one wrote. 'I find it offensive to give me a bigger nose and war paint across my cheeks along with the long braided hair.'
'Does version 2.0 include other minorities?' another disgruntled user asked. 'Seriously what genius created this? Why would Google approve this?'
But Google told CNN that the apps are not in violation of the company's policies that protect against hate speech.
'We don't comment on individual apps,' Google told the network in a statement. 'We remove apps from Google Play that violate our policies.'
Anger: One campaign group, 18 Million Rising, has called for Google Play to remove the apps from its site
Outrage: An online petition has also started on Change.org after Google, which said the app does not violate its policies on hate speech, failed to take it down from the Play store
The creator also makes other apps along the same theme including 'Make Me Old', 'Make Me Fat', 'Make Me Russian' and 'Make Me Irish', which gives users red hair, a red beard and a black eye.
The Asian and Indian options have each had between 50,000 to 100,000, according to apps analytics site App Annie.
